THE PAST, THE PRESENT & THE FUTURE

** UPDATED 10th October** as a special visitor to the stud is announced for 2012 - GWELNLLAN BRENIN DU will be running out with the Degla Mares next year.

ENTERED FOR THE BRIGHTWELLS COB SALES at BUILTH WELLS October 21st - 23rd  2011:

DEGLA GOLDEN RAIN: LOT 455 (Saturday)  (more info & photos on the Youngstock page)

The stud started in 1968 with the first cobs registered in 1970 namely Degla Golden Rose (Brenin Dafydd x Fronarth Pretty Maid) along with her half brother, Degla Tywysog Dafydd (Brenin Dafydd x Cefncoch Lady Lynne) both of which were retained by the Faulkeners. Peter Faulkner had much success in showing Degla Tywysog Dafydd in harness and today, the same usefulness can be found in the exsisting cobs, namely the correct confirmation, movement and temperament to excel in what the welsh cob was originally bred for.

With a policy of "bottoms up" breeding, all Degla stock has good foot and lovely flat bone. Bloodlines have been selected for type and movement and all the Degla Cobs and traditional mares are straight moving.

As well as driving classes, Degla cobs have done well in hand when time could be found to show. In recent years, Degla Brenin won the yearling colt class at the 2008 Glanusk Show, (image of Brenin, left, courtesy of Anthony Booth, Rainhill Welsh Cobs) Degla Romany Rose won her class and was Reserve Champion at the 2009 Winter Fair.  Degla cobs have gone on to do very well for their new owners too, providing an excellent foundation for their new owners, including Degla Flying Express for the Ffloslas Stud, with Degla John Boy, now owned by the Mycathlly Stud, being Champion Chaps 2009 and standing at stud for the first time in 2011 sure to produce many more champions.  At the 2011 Royal Welsh, Degla Branwen ,now owned by Iwan Davies, was 1st coloured yearling filly. Degla stock has often achieved very good prices at the Autumn Cob Sales and in recent years as Peter has handed over the Welsh Cob "reins" to his daughter Jane, his partbreds have attracted considerable attention and bidding, with top prices being paid for both colts and fillies.  Jane's brother Roger also plays a part in the stud, with a traditional coloured mare being put to a Welsh Cob stallion to produce substantial foals with good conformation and movement.
